The Indian has not died

He has lain down to sleep

a long sleep

The decade 1869-1879. Questions of sovereignty, indigenous territoriality and national identity are being settled. The main ranquel chieftains of the southern frontier maintain epistolary communication with the Franciscan friars of Río Cuarto. Possessing an ungrammatical language, they request through their lenguaraces, scribes and secretaries, that the clauses of the last Peace Treaty and its ratifications be fulfilled. Meanwhile, political diplomacy gets out of control, the rapacity for land activates the atrocious machinery of the ironically called Conquest of the Desert. The military charts of the campaign give an account of the savage manhunt. With the decline of the ranqueles and the murder of Baigorrita, the only one of their last chiefs who resisted subjugation, the pact of national silence was sealed. No inhabitant should be left out of the Europeanizing project of the country of the 80's generation, achieved by force of blood, subjugation, denial and silence. The final fate of the mestizo cacique, omitted by the official history, turned here into a rock idol, synthesizes the bastardized Argentine mestizo identity. Sentenced to deny its identity, the nation will be condemned to a perpetual search for it.

Photos taken during the trips made during 2014, 2015 and 2016 to Leuvucó, La Pampa, central settlement site of the ancient ranquel tolderías, and to the ranquel people in the province of San Luis, Argentina. As a whole, they make up the scenic projections for the performance of the play Güenusai (2020), with the support of a grant from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes, Argentina.
